Image to Pixel Art

Drop in any image and get back a real pixel grid. This is the same converter as the photo and picture pages — this one is for the people who say "image".

It is also deliberately not an AI filter. AI filters redraw your picture and quietly change what is in it. This tool averages real regions of your image onto a grid, so the result stays faithful, deterministic, and yours.

Supported Image Formats

Input: PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF (first frame), AVIF and BMP. Output: PNG at 1x for free; SVG and 4x PNG in the Pro Export Pack.

Transparent images stay transparent. Images wider than 4096px on the long edge are scaled down first, which keeps the converter snappy even on a phone.

Pixel Art, Not an AI Redraw

AI pixel filters are fun, but they invent detail. This converter does the opposite: every block is the exact average color of the region it covers.

That makes the output useful for real work — sprites you can edit block by block, charts you can stitch from, and 8-bit versions of photos that still look like the photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats can I convert?

PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, AVIF and BMP. Animated GIFs convert from their first frame.

How is this different from an AI pixel art filter?

An AI filter redraws the image and can change what is in it. This converter averages real regions onto a pixel grid — faithful, deterministic, and fully under your control.

Can I pixelate only part of an image?

This tool converts whole images. To hide a face or text in part of a photo, you want a pixelation-blur tool instead — that tool is on the roadmap.

Why is my large image scaled down?

Images above 4096px on the long edge are resized before processing so the converter stays responsive. The pixel art look is unaffected.

Is the pixel art export lossless?

The 1x PNG is written directly from the computed grid and is lossless. The 4x export uses nearest-neighbour scaling, so every pixel stays sharp.
